Silver Pines hands you nine inventory upgrades in total, and none of them are for sale: every backpack slot in the game comes from a hip bag hidden somewhere in the world. Each bag adds two inventory slots, so collecting the full set is worth 18 extra slots, and finding all of them also unlocks an achievement. Three bags sit in the opening Outskirts area, one is in Riverside, three are in Downtown, one waits at the top of Mt. Siah Kopa, and the last is inside Thelend Broadcasting. This guide walks the route to every one of them, starting with the three you can grab early.
How Inventory Upgrades Work
There are two upgrade types in Silver Pines: stamina and inventory. Stamina upgrades are coffee pots you brew and drink; inventory upgrades are hip bags you pick up. No vendor sells either one, so your backpack only grows when you physically find these bags. Each hip bag adds two slots the moment you collect it, and the game does not tell you how many are left in an area, which is exactly why a checklist matters here.
The distribution is easy to remember: three bags in the Outskirts, one in Riverside, three in Downtown, one at the Mt. Siah Kopa station, and one in Thelend Broadcasting, which is nine in all (3 + 1 + 3 + 1 + 1 = 9). If you are systematic about the early area, you can enter Downtown with six slots more than you started with.
The Three Early Bags in the Outskirts
The Motel Roof
Once you can explore the Red Bear Motel area, climb the outside walkway by room 5. Jump left onto the shed roof, follow the roofline left until you reach a drop point, drop down, and continue left to the bag. On the balcony route the railing is broken on the left side; that gap is your launch point across to the neighboring roof, and the bag hangs on the fence on the far side.
The Games Building (Arcade) by the Motel
This one costs ammunition, so do the roof first. You need a firearm with rounds to spare, because two obstacles must be shot: the padlock on the right-side door, and the grille above the passage behind it. Shoot the padlock, shoot the grille, climb through the opened route, and search inside the crates (beer boxes) in the back room for the bag. If you are short on lock-breaking options in general, the full Silver Pines code list covers every combination lock in town, though this particular door opens by force, not by code.
The Ferry Station
The ferry station bag has real prerequisites: finish the motel investigation and the first tunnel boss first. Take the ferry office key from under the flyer at the rabbit hole, bring the utility knife, unlock the station, head left past the area with the cat, cut open the curtain, and grab the bag on the step stool behind it. Community guides describe this obstacle either as a cuttable curtain or a breakable white barrier on the left; either way the bag sits on the step ladder. Do this side room before you actually ride the ferry, because the story moves you along otherwise.
⚠️ Unconfirmed. The exact form of the ferry station obstacle (cuttable curtain versus breakable barrier) differs between community sources; the step ladder location is consistent.
The Six Later Bags
| Area | Where | Route in one line |
|---|---|---|
| Riverside | Gas Station Bathroom | Take the bathroom key from behind the counter, break the barrier into the stall, bag on the toilet |
| Downtown | Town Hall Emergency Tunnel | Furnace room in the basement, crouch past the rubble right of the furnace, through the door to the tunnel exit |
| Downtown | Union Apartments Stairwell | Elevator button from the supervisor office, ride to the fourth floor, bag hanging in the stairwell |
| Downtown | Digging Man Mobile Home | After placing all bells on the bell station and calling the cable car, return to the Digging Man, bag on the left inside |
| Mt. Siah Kopa | Mountain Station | Out the double doors on the right, left to the hole in the walkway, drop down and jump the gaps, bag on the left |
| Thelend | Broadcasting Set | Unlock the Stage 1 door, downstairs past the set, through the door, break the vent above it, jump the walkways to the bag |
Two of these deserve a heads up. The Digging Man bag only becomes available after the full bell sequence on the gondola building's bell station, so do not go knocking early. The Thelend bag is the most platforming heavy of the nine: after breaking the vent above the door you climb up and jump a stretch of walkways, and the bag hangs at the end.
Living With a Full Backpack
Until you have all nine bags, space discipline matters. Items occupy grid cells, and you can rotate and rearrange them before the bag counts as full; keeping one connected open region instead of scattered holes effectively buys you another item or two. Storage containers share their contents across the whole town, so dump spare ammunition, puzzle items you are done with, and backup weapons into any container and retrieve them from any other. A few weapon upgrades also shrink the grid footprint of the gun itself, which is an indirect capacity bump worth taking early.
Two budget notes from the same economy. Manual saves cost $1 at a payphone (dial 77221 for Mr. Jackman), so keep a dollar for saving before you feed vending machines. And crafting materials live happily in storage: combine flat leaf with an empty bottle for a healing tonic, spare parts with tape for a repair kit, and craft them on demand before you leave the box rather than hauling components. Melee weapons have durability, so repair before setting out. For everything else in town, the Silver Pines puzzle and code guide and the game hub have you covered.
FAQ
How many inventory upgrades are in Silver Pines?
Nine hip bags in total: three in the Outskirts, one in Riverside, three in Downtown, one at the Mt. Siah Kopa station, and one in Thelend Broadcasting. Each adds two slots, for 18 slots across the full set.
Can you buy backpack slots from a shop?
No. Every inventory upgrade is a physical hip bag placed in the world, and there is no vendor or currency that sells slot space. Exploration is the only way to expand your backpack.
Do storage containers share inventory across town?
Yes. Every storage container in Silver Pines accesses the same shared contents, so you can deposit items on one side of town and withdraw them from any other container.
What are the stamina upgrades?
Coffee pots, brewed and then drunk. They increase dodge, sprint, and attack charge stamina, and collecting every upgrade of both types earns an achievement.
