I’m the bird now is the Steam achievement that asks you to make the boat fly. The current community method is simple: park the boat in the water, put dynamite under the hull, back away, and detonate. The physics launch counts, and the boat is not destroyed by the blast.

What you need

Two things: a boat and Dynamite.

You cannot buy Dynamite on the Lighthouse or the starting island. To unlock the boat, you must:

Complete the Who Stole My Beer quest.

Defeat the Spider Crab boss.

Return the Spider Crab’s carcass/shell to the Lighthouse Keeper.

Receive the Boat Keys from him.

Once you have the boat, sail to the Forest (Island 2). The shop there sells Dynamite for about $25. That is the only gated item for this achievement.

Engine upgrades are separate. Getting an upgrade is the cheaper Forest engine, and I am speed is the best engine. Neither one makes the boat fly for I’m the bird now. If a guide tells you to max the engine for this achievement, it is mixing up two different Steam tasks.

Step-by-step

Unlock the boat on Island 1 and buy the Radar so you can actually leave.

Reach Island 2 and buy Dynamite from the shop for about $25. Buy at least one.

Put the boat in the water with a clear sky above the hull. Do not jam it against a cliff if you want a clean launch.

Equip Dynamite. You can either:

Light the fuse, then quickly place or throw the bundle underneath the hull, or

Throw an unlit Dynamite under the boat first, then shoot it to trigger the explosion manually.

Sprint out of the lethal radius. If the bundle is still in your hands when it explodes, you die. The achievement can still pop if the boat left the water.

Watch the boat go up. I’m the bird now should unlock. You can verify it in your Steam Library immediately after.

Placement is the main reason attempts fail. The charge has to sit under the hull, not on the dock and not on a nearby rock. Beside the boat wastes the blast. One bundle is enough. Stacking extra Dynamite is a good way to kill yourself without a cleaner launch.

Holding the throw button increases throw force and distance, which gives you more control over placement. You want the Dynamite landing close to the boat’s hull, not 10 meters away.

The unlit-then-shoot method removes the timing pressure entirely and is the cleaner option if you want to avoid a live fuse.

What this is not

This is not a travel exploit for the Volcano. Patch 1.0.5 removed sailing to locked islands, so a flying boat will not skip Forest, Desert, or Rocks.

It is also not the Bean one-hour route. Bean still needs the full trophy chain inside sixty minutes.

Engine upgrades still matter for ordinary sailing, but they do not make the boat fly for this achievement.

Co-op and physics chaos

In a lobby, one player can plant while another sits at the wheel. Tell the group before you light the fuse.

Patch 1.0.10 limited explosion velocity so items do not fly so far they disappear, but the boat launch for this achievement still works from a hull charge.

Do not use this stunt as storage. If you care about ground loot, remember 1.0.10 now keeps up to 64 world items on save, prioritizing weapons, tools, quest items, and creatures.

Dynamite is also used for Everyone’s dream — kill a seagull with Dynamite — and for blasting clusters of fish into cook piles. Those are separate goals. Do the flying-boat attempt in open water so you do not grief a friend’s stash or a quest trophy sitting on the sand.

FAQ

How do you make the boat fly in How to Fish?

Unlock Island 2, buy Dynamite for about $25, place one bundle under the floating hull, back away, and detonate. That unlocks I’m the bird now.

Does Dynamite destroy the boat?

No. A bundle under the hull launches it for the achievement and does not delete the boat.

Do I need the best engine to fly?

No. I am speed and Getting an upgrade are separate engine achievements. The fly stunt uses Dynamite, not horsepower.

Can I buy Dynamite on the first island?

No. Dynamite appears in the Island 2 shop after you have the Boat Keys from the Spider Crab hand-in.

Does the achievement count if I die?

Yes. The achievement counts regardless of whether your character survives the explosion. The only thing that matters is that the boat goes airborne.

Is this worth doing beyond the achievement? No. The boat does not gain any new function from being launched. This is purely an achievement unlock, and a fun one.
