The best weapons in Gears of War: E-Day change with the mode you are playing. In Versus, the Gnasher, the Prototype Lancer, and the Longshot define the meta. In Horde Siege, the Gut-Puncher and the Incinerator climb to the top. In Campaign, range flexibility wins, which makes the Prototype Lancer and the Longshot your staples. This tier list ranks all twelve core weapons for both major modes and explains what each gun actually does, so you can spend your upgrade parts on the right ones.

The Tier List at a Glance

Weapon Versus Horde Siege
Gnasher S B
Prototype Lancer S S
Longshot S S with the Marksman class, A otherwise
Hammerburst A A
Breechshot A A
Torque Bow A B
Lancer Mk1 A B
Snub B (disputed) B
Incinerator B A, near S
Gut-Puncher B S
Ripper B A
Striga B B

Twelve weapons, three Versus staples up top, four dependable A-tier guns, and a bottom half where the tier depends on the mode more than on the gun.

The S Tier Staples

Gnasher. Still the defining Versus weapon. E-Day's heavier movement has not killed the aggressive game: cover slides and flanks still close distance, and once you are inside the Gnasher's range it ends fights outright. It now holds six shells instead of eight, but the round-by-round Active Reload means you can load a single shell and re-engage instead of committing to a full reload animation. Outside its effective range it is a liability, full stop. The Slug mod converts it into a single-payload hand cannon and patches exactly that weakness.

Prototype Lancer. The safest all-rounder in the game and the correct starting point for new players: higher fire rate and a deeper magazine than the Mk1, plus the chainsaw for instant executions on grunts. It teaches the fundamentals without punishing mistakes, and in Horde Siege it stays S-tier all the way through. The Huge Magazine mod (sustained fire) and the Active Compensator (tightens the crosshair during continuous fire) are the two builds worth taking.

Longshot. The cleanest long-range power weapon. It decides fights before Gnasher range, punishes cover peeks, and removes priority targets from the map. The tradeoffs are real: first-person scope sway, projectile travel time, and near helplessness up close. The payoff justifies the high skill floor, and in Horde Siege a Marksman turns it into a machine: pair it with the Pulse Drone and the Precision Capacitor for a crit-shot cooldown loop and it is flat-out S-tier.

The A Tier: Strong With a Catch

Hammerburst. Accurate six-round bursts, and a Perfect Active Reload grants a faster fire rate. It controls mid-range lanes as well as anything in the game, and precise players push it to S in Versus. When the fight gets messy and Gnashers close in, it drops off fast. Spring-Loaded Mag plus Close Quarters Barrel is the aggressive build.

Breechshot. A headshot from this gun kills outright in Versus, and its Gnasher-style round-by-round reload keeps pressure on between shots. The built-in axe handles executions, and the Sonic Disruptor interaction (extended via the Retention Battery) adds a control tool on top. Its ceiling lives and dies on your headshot rate, which is why it sits in A.

Torque Bow. Terrifying ceiling, expensive mistakes. Charging it behind cover and releasing a pre-aimed explosive arrow into someone's cover peek is one of the best feelings in the game, but rushed or missed shots hand the duel away, and close pressure denies you the setup time. In the hands of a patient player it reaches S in Versus. Mobile Target Laser keeps the charge reticule visible while hip-firing; Stake Bolts drop the explosive property for a faster charge and crit damage.

Lancer Mk1. The aggressive rifle alternative: hard-hitting up close, workable at range if you pay the recoil tax, with a semi and full-auto toggle plus bayonet melee. It sits right on the A/B line, a pre-launch damage nerf shaved its kill time, with Semi-Auto, Combat Scope, and Precision Rifling it converts into a genuine precision weapon.

Snub. The one genuine ranking dispute in E-Day: launch guides land anywhere from A to C on it. Both describe the same gun: fast, accurate, reliable, a default secondary rather than a weapon you build a plan around. A pre-launch fire-rate nerf trimmed its ceiling. The Double Tap Burst mod (a two-round burst per trigger pull) is the only build that changes the conversation.

The B Tier: Situational, Not Bad

Incinerator. An Imulsion charge shotgun: a fully charged close blast kills in one hit, and it leaves a burning area behind. In Horde Siege, where enemies walk into you at doorways and choke points, it flirts with S. In Versus, where humans reposition mid-duel and the charge time gets you killed, it drops. Cylinder Choke widens the spread into area denial.

Gut-Puncher. Two different guns depending on the mode. In Versus it is a B, in Horde Siege it is arguably the best weapon in the game: armor-piercing explosive rounds that you detonate on command, punishing anything that hides behind cover. Concussive Rounds convert it into a stun tool. The execution loop (Hemostatic Valve shortens your Adrenaline Injector cooldown after an execution, then Blood Mag refills a full Perfect Reload) turns you into a one-man army. Bring one to every boss fight; our E-Day boss guide tells you exactly where it pays off.

Ripper. The LMG whose accuracy and fire rate build the longer you hold the trigger. Incendiary Rounds plus Twin Ammo (a Perfect Reload after a full burn window) create real damage windows in Horde. The ammo pool and reload time are the cost: it rewards commitment, not cover-fight burst play.

Striga. A burst pistol that wants charge time, which is an awkward ask for a backup weapon. Rifled Round (a three-round burst) plus Tactical Scope makes it a genuine ranged precision sidearm, and its rank genuinely depends on which mods you can afford, which is why launch guides have not settled it. The Snub remains the more intuitive pick for most players.

Loadouts, Mods, and Heavy Weapons

Beginner picks are simple. In Versus, run the Gnasher plus the Prototype Lancer and learn the Gnasher early: close-range shotgun timing, cover exits, and reading committed pushes are the core skills of the mode. In Horde Siege, start with the Prototype Lancer and graduate to the Gut-Puncher once the class level allows it. In Campaign, the Prototype Lancer plus the Longshot covers every engagement type. A brand-new player should simply run the Prototype Lancer plus the Snub: forgiving, full range coverage, no bad habits to unlearn later.

Mods are a PvE system: up to four per weapon in Horde Siege, banned entirely in Versus, where everyone spawns on identical loadouts and power weapons come from map spawns. The principle that matters: mod to fix a weakness, not to stack a strength. Slug fixes the Gnasher's range: a second accuracy mod on the already-accurate Prototype Lancer does less than Huge Magazine. Unlocks run through Siege class levels: the Gut-Puncher arrives at Assault level 28 or Breacher level 30, the Torque Bow at Assault level 30, while the Gnasher, Snub, Prototype Lancer, and Hammerburst are starting weapons for at least one class. Weapon parts come from completing missions, kept only on a successful exfil, and spent at the supply cache. Loadouts carry across classes.

Heavy weapons skip this list entirely: the rip-offable mounted guns such as the Troika hit like a truck, but they slow your movement and their ammo is scarce. Grab one when a fight offers it, drop it when it runs dry. Grenades are simpler: Frag for the delayed blast, Incendiary for impact plus a burning area, Smoke to cut sightlines, Shock to stun, Stim to heal and revive through a downed teammate.

FAQ

What is the best gun in Gears of War: E-Day?

Mode by mode: the Gnasher, Prototype Lancer, and Longshot lead Versus, the Gut-Puncher and Incinerator lead Horde Siege, and the Prototype Lancer plus Longshot is the safest Campaign pairing.

Are weapon mods allowed in Versus multiplayer?

No. Mods only exist in PvE. In Versus, every player spawns with an identical loadout and power weapons spawn on the map.

Can the Breechshot one-shot in PvP?

Yes. A Breechshot headshot kills outright in Versus, confirmed behavior rather than luck, and its round-by-round reload keeps the pressure on between shots.

How do I unlock weapons in Horde Siege?

Through Siege class levels. The Gut-Puncher unlocks at Assault level 28 or Breacher level 30, and the Torque Bow at Assault level 30. In Campaign, the Prototype Lancer first drops in Act 2, Chapter 2, and the Torque Bow in Act 3, Chapter 5.

Will this tier list change?

Yes. These rankings reflect the launch window, and the October 5 patch shipped no weapon balance changes, so the list stands as written until the next balance pass. For where the guns matter most, see our guide to every boss fight, collected with everything else in the Gears of War: E-Day section.
